Since its inception, two decades ago as a private equity firm, Fortress Investment Group has been setting trends and doing things that have never been done before by firms of its kind. One such trend is when it became the first large equity firm in the United States of America to be traded publicly.
Besides being traded publicly, Fortress Investment Group was also the first private equity firm to be bought. In 2017, the firm was acquired by Softbank Group Corporation at a price of $3.3 billion. Softbank is a multinational company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. Although Fortress was acquired by Softbank it still remains to operate as an independent institution with Briger (joined the firm later on), Edens and Nardone serving as key principals.
Today, Fortress is divided into three key departments namely; Private Equity, Credit, and Permanent Capital Vehicles Division. The Credit department was founded in 2002 and it is led by Briger. It has numerous components like the Fortress Japan Opportunity Funds and Fortress Credit Opportunity Funds. All the components are global in nature and concentrate on the undervalued assets and illiquid credit. Another division is the Private Equity Department. Led by Nardone and Wesley, this department is concerned with cash flow generation from investments in North America, the Caribbean, and Western Europe.
With their headquarters in New York, Fortress Investment Group is a company that specializes in managing its clients’ investments. The company was formed in 1998 by Rob Kauffman who retired in 2012, Wesley R. Edens and Randal Nardone. As of 2016, the company had alternative assets, credit and hedge funds that totaled to $70.2 billion.
Before founding Fortress, Wesley Edens worked at Black Rock Financial Investments. Randal Nardone and Rob Kauffman, on the other hand, were managing directors at UBS.
The three came together and formed the investment firm that quickly took off and expanded into hedge funds, debt securities, and real estate investments. In fact, within a short period, the company was doing very well with its private equity funds netting 37.9 percent. In 2007, Fortress Investments Group LLC was launched on the New York Stock Exchange Market.
Due to its outstanding performance in the market, Fortress Investment Group has gained great recognition and received numerous awards. In 2014, the Institutional Investor named the company the Hedge Fund Manager of The Year. “Furthermore, HFMWeek also recognized Fortress as the “Management Firm of The Year.”
